The death of a beloved animal companion is a hardship for any pet parent or family.  And although grieving is a natural process, it’s not an easy transition.  Grief experts recommend taking the time to commemorate the life of your pet.

There are many ways to honor your pet’s memory, including holding a pet funeral or memorial service.  A simple service that involves family members, including children, is a wonderful way to say goodbye to your pet.  Funeral and memorial services are powerful tools for processing grief and can help initiate the healing process.  Those included can share stories from your pet’s life and mourn the loss together.

PetMD offers the following additional suggestions:

– Scatter your pet’s cremated remains in a favorite spot.

Keep your pet’s cremated remains at home in a beautiful urn.

– Purchase jewelry to wear that contains a small portion of your pet’s cremated remains.

 – Create a pet memorial site with a marker, thus creating a space to return to and “visit” your pet.

– Create a scholarship or pet memorial fund in your pet’s name.

– Donate to a cause or organization that helps pets in need.

Volunteer your time in your pet’s memory by helping at a local animal shelter, rescue, or Humane Society.

– Make a keepsake box containing your pet’s favorite toys, tuft of fur, collar, etc.

– Create a picture book or scrapbook dedicated to your pet.

– Join online pet loss groups or forums to help you see that you are not alone.

– Make a paw print keepsake – many veterinarians or pet funeral homes offer this service.

– Commission a work of art depicting your pet to hang in your home.

– Get a tattoo of your pet.

– Adopt again – when the time is right and you feel ready.  There are many pets in need of a good home.
